Hartlepool Civic Society Award 2013 for Conservation

20/21 The Green, Seaton Carew, Hartlepool.

Property before conversion.   Property after conversion.

Development Objectives

To convert the property back from a pair of houses to a single private family dwelling by removing the dividing party walls at ground floor, first floor and attic levels; to replace the present separate modern stairs with a single staircase in a style more suited to the character and age of the property; to rationalise the present messy group of dormer roof extensions to the rear to allow better access to the attic rooms.

As a consequence of the conversion, to re-model the front elevation to remove the ‘modern’ and wholly inappropriate and ugly bay windows to no. 21 and the rotten and leaking bay windows to no. 20 with single splayed bay windows to the ground floor only (modelled on the design and detail of the existing bays to no. 20), each side of a new central front door with moulded timber door case. At first floor level to insert new sash windows above the new bay windows, to match the existing central bedroom window in style.

To return the look of the property to something approaching what it might have looked like in the early 19th century, before conversion to two separate properties and to be more in keeping with the overall style and character of other properties on The Green.
